Community Outreach Services Update 2006-08

WJFB, with Registered Social Worker Swati Fernando, provided the following services:

  • Carried out a Health and Wellness Screening Program especially for breast cancer and cervical cancer with the Women's Health Resources (WHR) of the Calgary Health Region (CHR) and the Dashmesh Cultural Senior Centre for 200 immigrant women

  • Conducted several educational workshops on the prevention of domestic violence and women's health issues in conjunction with CHR's Women's Health Resources

  • Conduced exercise classes for 20 senior women twice a week

  • Connected the seniors yearly festival with the City of Calgary

  • Provided training to senior police officers of the Calgary Police Service in cultural awareness and knowledge with case studies about immigrants

  • Providing ongoing help with documents, referrals and counseling to over 2,000 clients registered in our secured computer

  • Providing ongoing weekly support systems to 100 immigrant women through a support group

  • Providing ongoing training to Calgary caregivers in patient care for patients with dementia

  • Providing ongoing counseling for senior immigrant women abuse cases

  • Ensuring that abused children are sent to the appropriate agencies for referral

  • WJFB received a grant from the Calgary Foundation to plan and perform several plays and dramas with the City of Calgary to Calgary communities with awareness through depicting the plight of Calgary immigrant seniors

  • Alberta Government Minister of Seniors granted the Seniors Award for Excellence in Seniors Services to Swati Fernando, Registered Social Worker

  • YWCA's Annual Peace Award was granted to Swati Fernando for her services to the Calgary seniors
