The World
Job and Food Bank has completed the short-term Micro
Credit/Lending Project program. This program offered skills training and job
creation for the disadvantaged women living on the Reserves who are
unemployed and living in poverty. It also served as an opportunity for these
women to gain access on how to start their own small business cooperatives,
so they may become self-reliant and provide the necessities for their
children.
In July of 2000, WJFB opened a retail store in Calgary, Alberta - Native Women's Works of Canada. The store was formed as a method of generating income to lessen their dependence on social assistance and to have a sustainable income. A large number of handmade Native arts and crafts were collected from Native Women living on the reserves of Western Canada to be sold at the store. At least 25 aboriginal women were able to earn income to support their families as a result of this project.
